IMDb

IMDb (Internet Movie Database) is the world's most popular and authoritative source for information on movies, TV shows, and celebrities. Hundreds of millions of customers all over the world rely on IMDb to discover and decide what to watch, advance their professional entertainment careers through IMDbPro, and grow their businesses using IMDb data and trending insights.

How do IMDb ratings work?

IMDb publishes weighted vote averages rather than raw data averages. The simplest way to explain it is that although we accept and consider all votes received by users, not all votes have the same impact (or 'weight') on the final rating.

Although, Imdb does not disclose the exact method used to generate ratings to ensure that their rating mechanism remains effective.

Letterboxd

Letterboxd is a global social network for grass-roots film discussion and discovery. You can use it as a diary to record and share your opinion about films as you watch them, or just to keep track of films you've seen in the past. You can also showcase your favorites on your profile page. Rate, review and tag films as you add them. Find and follow your friends to see what they're enjoying. Keep a watchlist of films you'd like to see, and create lists/collections on any given topic. We've been described as “like GoodReads for movies”.

How do their ratings work?

The Letterboxd rating system is a 1 - to - 5 star scale, with half-star increments, allowing users to rate films from 0.5 to 5 stars. While the app provides a basic rating, individual users often have their own personal interpretations of what each rating signifies, with 5 stars often reserved for favorites, 2.5 for average, and 0.5 for films with no redeeming qualities.

Finally, Letterboxd uses a weighted average to calculate its official lists, median ratings for each movie and the number one spot for the "Top 250" movies.

Cinemascore

CinemaScore is the industry leader in measuring movie appeal. We provide unbiased measurement of audience response that helps gauge movie appeal and success by polling movie audiences on opening night for their reaction to the latest major movie releases.

How are their ratings calculated?

On opening night around the country, CinemaScore polls moviegoers for their opinions on new movie releases. Audience members fill out ballot cards right at the theatre, grading a movie A to F and providing demographic information. CinemaScore uses this direct balloting approach to establish a movie’s grade—its overall “CinemaScore.”

However, movies that open in less than 1,500 screens are not automatically polled or reported on social media or on the CinemaScore website. If a film opens in less than 1,500 screens, CinemaScore either doesn't poll the film at all or may be contracted privately (by the film’s studio or producers) to conduct a survey.

Common Sense Media

Common Sense Media rates movies, TV shows, podcasts, books, and more so families can feel good about the entertainment choices they make for their kids. They offer the largest, most trusted library of independent age-based ratings and reviews. Their timely parenting advice supports families as they navigate the challenges and possibilities of raising kids in the digital age.

They review all of the high-profile media that's intended for or appeals to kids. And because media profoundly affects kids' social, emotional, and physical development, Common Sense Media evaluates media based on age appropriateness. They rate titles for ages 2 to 18, covering movies, games, books, podcasts, apps, websites, and TV shows.

How are their ratings calculated?

For each title Common Sense Media reviews, they indicate the youngest appropriate age, based on the media’s specific content and overall developmental guidelines.

Right below their ratings, a list of content categories gives the user in-depth information on each title. Each category is rated on a scale of 0 to 5. If no dots are filled in, that means the content is either not applicable or doesn't rate on their scale. If three dots are highlighted, that means there's a fair amount of that type of content, and five dots indicates that there's lots of it.

Metacritic

The Metascore is a single score that represents the critical consensus for games, movies, TV shows and albums.

How the metascore is created:

  1. They first curate a diverse group of highly respected critics and assign scores to their reviews.
  2. They then calculate the weighted average of those scores, and turn the results into a single number and color: the Metascore.

To display media that is critically acclaimed they use Must-Badges, which showcase the best entertainment as determined by the most respected critics.
